Who is Don Draper?

Don Draper is a reminder to those men and those who will grow up to be men, what it was like to be in a time when America was America. This America was dominated by men and the apex of this society was evident in American industry, innovation and science. You could not get more red, white and blue American than a character like Don Draper. He had it all, Women, fame, success, power and family. He is a man who is constantly in control of his environment and AMC portrays his character well unlike the modern portrayal of men in TV today which are portrayed as clueless, sluggish and simple without control.

Don Draper is a partner in an advertising firm in New York City in the 1960s. At this moment in the season, he is separated from his wife Betty, due to his extra-marital indiscretions with any woman he wanted. Don could smell the scent off a conquest and could not resist the chase, capture and humiliating release. Moreover, Draper’s character looks like he was created by the hands of Michelangelo with God’s personal guidance. Draper uses his charm and good looks to get everything he wants and that is not limited to just women. It is Drapers physical and mental attributes that make him irresistibly to both women and men on the show and off the show.

Why was a character like Draper even thought up? The purpose of a character like Draper is to remind men of their forgotten quality as it matters to how men are perceived in the main stream. With the rise of political correctness as well as male guilt to over bearing misguided feminism, men are portrayed like the women of the 1950s. Furthermore, AMC takes men back to a time when they were truly the supreme authority in the lives of themselves, women and more importantly, their family.

Draper is not without flaws but what great man is not? Draper is a caring father but a bad husband. In Draper’s mind he would never leave his wife but he also could not resist the indulgences of other women. Draper like all men who create wealth can not resist the urge to plant his seed in every woman who comes along. Draper’s character conveys the folly of all powerful men who must have it all when they already had it all to begin with. In essence, if one can not resist temptation, he sacrifices the life of the normal man, which is his family.

As a role model Draper inspires courage that men can take charge again. Most television shows portray men in an unfavorable women knows right setting. Quite frankly those shows are boring. Feminism can not replace the natural instinct for women to succumb to a man's charm, Sex appeal and authority. It is an attraction to all women, especially the ones who are misandry. Women Love to be told what to do because its comforting to them not to worry about decisions and out comes. This is why Draper although unfaithful is still so appealing to women and men who watch MADMEN.

All in all Don Draper’s character is the perfect mix of entertainment, reality and the yearn to bring back manliness with no approval. In real life men would just have to decide what kind of Don Draper they would like to be. Don Draper the ladies man, the father, the businessman, the problem solver or the unfaithful husband. AMC presents a set of attributes that both men and women can pick and choose from as they see fit. However, in real life you get the good and the bad, but in the case of Don Draper some attributes can be avoided to be the closest thing humanly possible to the idealistic man.

Don Draper Ladies Man

Draper is a bottle of fine wine capable to seducing any woman on the first sip. He constantly is portrayed as a conosur of fine women and more then often succeeds in seducing them. However, more often than not, Draper pursues these women for a reason other than just conquest. He feels that he is getting more than just casually sex out of them but in a way its an objection to his biological mother who was a prostitute. Draper is getting back at his mother by treating all women as men treated his mother save his wife Betty.

Don Draper Great Father

Regardless of Draper's extra-marital affairs he is a caring father. He is shown to be more close to his daughter Sally than his son. He feels a need to guide his daughter away from the path of her mother and as well as his own mother. Sally is portrayed as a vulnerable girl who is helpless and needs the protection, guidance and direction from her father. Sally illustrates every woman's conscious and unconscious desire to meet the expectations of their father and in turn the man they marry. Draper is careful about this fact and often protects Sally from the misguided influences of her mother Betty.

Draper is a rock-star in the field of his industry. He is very pompous but comes off confident and authoritative. He finds fires and puts them out quickly. He takes control even when it is not his role to do so. He is portrayed having a great work ethic and with the exceptional skill of delegating work and at the same time taking credit for that work.  He is hated, loved and feared in his business. Most of his co-workers trust to be with him and fear to stand against him. In the end, Draper will steer the ship into a safe direction.

 Don Draper Problem Solver

Draper is constantly faced with hardships and problems. From losing clients, being bought out to starting his own firm, Draper figures out the right path. More importantly, Draper convinces others to join him in figuring out these problems. Regardless of the answers he come sup with he treats the solutions seen by other as his way or the highway. This very reason is why his character is so successful and entertaining. Again, his quick wit illustrates the old ways in which men took charge and did not have to go through a committee of demographic approval before he saved the day unlike the society in which we live today.

 Don Draper Unfaithful Husband

Draper is a flaw hero of a character. Men love him, women love him yet each despise traits portrayed by his character.  Draper has no real misgivings about his extra-marital affairs. He seems to roll them off his back as meaning nothing and this is the cost of doing business and living the life he provides for his family. Draper however excuses his behavior by accusing that his wife's family never accepted him and unconsciously he was giving them their assumed portrayal of his character, which he did unbeknownst to all but his wife Betty.
